Is Survival Selfish
Do you think saving yourself is selfish? If you do, you are right. You must be selfish in order to survive and keep yourself alive. Survival is selfish because people can’t count on others to save them, and people shouldn’t assume they are capable of saving others, it could cost them their lives. People can’t always depend on others and need to do what needs to be done in order to survive.
People can’t count on other people to save them because if they can’t put themselves first, how are they supposed to try to save others when they have a hard time saving themselves. People who waited to be saved during 9-11 died because they were told to wait for rescue personnel, but they couldn’t get to them. “In the World Trade Center disaster many people who were used to following the rules died because they did what they were told by authority figures. An employee of the Aon Insurance Company on the ninety-third floor of the south tower had begun his escape but returned to his office after the security guards made a general announcement that the building was safe and that people should stay inside until they were told to leave.”(Gonzales, 327). This quote is explaining that many people died because they listened to authority figures and were not saved. Juliane survived the plane crash because she left the others and saved herself, she had to look after herself instead of waiting for help. The others who waited for help died. “Meanwhile the others who had lived through the fall decided to await rescue, which is not necessarily a bad idea either. But expecting someone else to take responsibility for your well-being can be fatal.” (Gonzales, 326) The quote proves that if you put your life in someone else's hand’s it can come to an end. Survival is selfish because people shouldn’t count on other people to save them nor should they assume they are capable of saving others.
People have put their life in others hands at one point or another. They shouldn’t assume that that that person is able to save them. The woman who survived the plane crash would have died had she attempted to save the others on the plane. “If she’d tried, she probably would have parishad with them. So why do survivors berate themselves for not adding to the loss by attempting the impossible” (Waltace 318) What this quote is explaining is that if she tried to save others she would have died. Yates had to make the decision to cut his friend loose or they would have both died on the mountain. “In Yate’s case, he had time to think hard about the odds and the possibilities he was facing and to realize that he couldn’t save anyone but himself.” (Waltace 319). This quote explains that if he would have tried to save anyone else, he would have died.
Some people argue that doctors and nurses have higher rates of survival than others because they have a purpose. This may be true but they are also trained professionals. Ordinary people shouldn’t try this or they could die. It's obvious that survival is selfish.
Because people can’t count on others to save them and people shouldn’t assume they are capable of saving others survival is selfish. Relying on others to save you puts yourself in danger. The woman who climbed over people to save her own life was selfish. Had she not been she’d have died So, is survival selfish? Obviously.
